A pottery observation journal

This demonstration journal records a simple way to observe handmade pottery. Choose a cup or bowl and describe its shape, surface and colour in your own words.

Look closely

Start with the silhouette. Notice whether the rim is straight or curved, then compare the inside and outside surfaces. Sketch what you see rather than guessing how the piece was made.

Keep a record
